The search for the right business health insurance is a very stressful affair for the employer. The reason for this complication is caused by all the factors that need to be put in mind during the time. The decision can be based on so many variables depending on which one promises the best results. Someone can either go for the alternative that provides good options or the one that has affordable payment plans.

Research is a very important aspect of the decision making process. The information obtained from the research empowers the employer on what to look for. Make sure that you research on all the policy covers that can apply in this situation. It is also important to know how much each of the packages costs to avoid being overcharged for the service. Apart from that, it is important to know what services are offered with each of the policies.

Having the right information makes it very easy for the employer to decide on what they want. Ask about the criteria that the service provider uses to decide on the value of the policy. They should also explain the reason as to why the policy estimates are as they are. If the company is offering low premiums for their services then the deductibles charged become higher.

It is very critical to ask the employees about what they want for the policy. Once the employer knows what the employees expects, it becomes easier to know the type of package to invest in. There are also other factors that will influence the employer’s final decision.

The greatest strategy to employ is to identify the legal aspects of policy. This is important because the rules and regulations keep on changing depending on where the company is located. With the right information the employee is able to ask for some of the benefits that they are entitled to. Sometimes, the company can be exempted from paying taxes by default.

The issue of applying for business health insurance can be a tricky affair for anyone. This is more so because of the numerous considerations that a person has to bear in mind when tackling the question. You can either go for a comprehensive cover while others decide to secure the policy with the lowest premium. There are also company owners who decide to choose the arrangement that will be most affordable for their budget.

In order to make a good choice, a person is expected to research widely on the topic before embarking on the search for a good cover. Some of the information a person needs to make an informed decision is the variety of the plans on offer. A person also needs to have a rough estimate of what each of these covers goes for. The research should also cover the services that each of the policies offers.

With the right information, the decision making process will not be that challenging to the owners of the company. Always find out the criteria used by each of the service provider to determine the costs of the policies presented to the client. Ensure that they explain the method used to reach the price that they are offering. If the deductibles are steep, then they should offer low premiums for their policies.

Find out what the employees expect to get out of the cover and then work with the information obtained. This ensures that whatever policy that the company uses for their employees is in sync with their medical needs. If a company has young employees, they need not invest in an expensive cover since they do not have lot of complications.

It is important to familiarize oneself with the rules and regulations dictating the service providers in your area. This is mostly so because each state has its own rules that they adhere to. This is the only way of ensuring that the company is able to enjoy the benefits that come to those who use this service. Some states ensure that there is exemption of tax for people who apply for the service.

In case a person is not aware of the legal aspects of the industry, there are websites that they can visit to find out more about the topic. A company has the right to withdraw their premiums whenever they deem fit. However, the owner has to talk to their accountants to obtain more information.

There are those websites that have a chat feature for the visitors, this provides them with a chance to talk to other people about the topic in question. There are also other websites that record whatever information that has been acquired over time and then avail it to any interested persons. There is not cost incurred when a person looks for the information over the internet.

It is possible for a person to decide to use group services for their employees. In this form of business health insurance, the employees and their dependants can enjoy the same cover. This is the cover that most members of the public are enrolled in. The funds used to furnish this type of policy come from both the employer and their employees. It is the employer’s duty to find the appropriate policy for their company and then the employees can decide whether or not to join it.

Healthcare Trusts

Healthcare trusts are a recognised alternative to traditional PMI schemes and operate in an almost identical manner except that, with a healthcare trust, you’re able to set the rules.

For employers private medical insurance (PMI) is still a major factor in staff retention and recruitment. However, this has to be offset against the cost of providing these benefits and in these recessionary times, many employers are considering whether this is still viable and affordable?

How do Healthcare Trusts work?

Healthcare Trusts can deliver a more cost effective solution than PMI for medium and large businesses, without compromising on employee care. The main difference between private medical insurance premiums and healthcare trusts is that the healthcare trust premiums are paid into an independent trust account, rather than directly to a health insurance provider.

Because premiums go into a trust if claims are lower than anticipated, any surplus in the trust is retained by the employer, not the health insurance provider.

Healthcare Trusts can typically be 10% cheaper than using PMI

The cover within the healthcare trust is comparable to the cover provided by PMI, however, Healthcare Trusts can save an average of 10%, which is a substantial saving.

Some of the key advantages of a Healthcare Trust include:

  • Significant savings over the cost of corporate PMI premiums (typically 10%)
  • Employer keeps the money if claims are lower than anticipated
  • Rules set by the employer and the employer decides when you want the fund to pay out

Health Cash Plans

Much is being said at present in the UK about keeping ourselves fit and health and watching our diet. Fast food has taken its toll on the NHS and obesity is becoming a national problem especially in children.

We have a great National Health Service (NHS) here in the UK but medical costs are expensive and the NHS does cover things like dental or optician costs so it is wise to have your own insurance polciy to cover yourself for those unexpected bills, this is especially true if you also have a family and during any 12 months you may have several dental or opticians bills to pay.

Having a Health Cash Plans can save you hundreds of pounds a year on these costs. These health cash plans will usually cover between 50%-75% of costs. For example if your new spectacles cost £150, your Health Cash Plan may reimburse you £120, meaning your spectacles have cost you only £30, a much more tolerable cost to accept.

Important to remember that Health Cash Plans are not Health Insurance policies, they pay out cash sums towards medical expenses often not covered by Health Insurance or the NHS.

Have you tried the Internet?

No, I’m not joking, yes I know that you are doing that right now, but I mean USE the internet, in its fullness. The internet has opened up a whole new ‘world’ of possibilities for the savvy. Markets previously inaccessable are now open to almost everyone. And the world of private health insurance is no different, all the major companies operate multinationally, and almost all of them offer some form of international policy. That means you are no longer limited to geting your insurance in the country you live.

If you are a Brit living in the USA you have as much right to buy your insurance in the UK as the USA [or even Russia if you wish], and if you are an American living in Britain the same rules apply. But not only that, if you are a Brit living in Britain, there is no difference. Take advantage of price differentials around the world, but of course it would be much more helpful if it was a company that you trust, or have even heard of [just because a Siberian company offers you a policy at really low prices doesn’t mean that they will live up to their promises, and how do you get your recourse from a Siberian company? Phone them up, e-mail them, fly off to Ulaan Baator to complain?

No, there are limits, you have to use the basic rule of common sense otherwise you will find yourself at the wrong end of a scam. simple rules are needed to play safe on the internet. Only go with brands you can trust. Never accept any unsolicited correspondance, and never transfer money to anybody unless you can be absolutely sure of their validity. Oh and don’t trust any sons of Nigerian Princes.

The BBC have an interesting series available to watch on the iPlayer at the moment – Victorian Pharmacy. Its an intriguing look at the running of a pharmacy in the 19th century “where traditional remedies such as leeches, oil of earthworm and potions laced with cannabis and opium were popular and regularly used“. Great viewing and a real insight into how our medical care has changed over the years – the programme leaves you wondering, what will our ancestors think of early 21st century healthcare?

Health – covered!

Do you subscribe to any health magazines? I don’t, but then there’s so much stuff on the internet that I don’t really need to. You can even get (some of) The Lancet online now, which is pretty cool.

Generally though I find myself reading the health pages of the broadsheets to keep up with the latest news on stuff like the NHS and private medical care, plus some of the wider health issues of the day such as the political stuff surrounding stuff like alcohol consumption. A report in The Guardian today even states that the health service could save a hefty £1.7 billion if people suffering from addiction could get more help sooner.

It’s interesting to observe just how much smoking has been reduced in the last few years, I wonder if heavy drinking and public drunkenness will start to become old fashioned soon too?
