The warning came as Andrew Ozanne discovered that he was not covered due to a pre-existing condition. He believed that people needed to know to help them make decisions as he said: “Don’t travel. You’re at risk. It is a serious risk and it is a serious cost.”

UK and Guernsey authorities had a reciprocal arrangement; however, it was terminated in 2009. Currently there is no arrangement and little prospect that one will be reached in the near future.

Both UK and Guernsey residents will have to pay ambulance, doctors and acute care fees which will leave a large hole in your pocket. Few people can pay for care themselves.

Mr Ozanne found that his insurer could not cover him as he said:

“I’ve spoken to my insurers and they do try hard but they can’t offer insurance to cover my pre-existing condition.”

Guernsey authorities are unlikely to waive the cost knowing that there would be a public outcry. The locals would argue that they discriminate in favour of UK tourists. Individuals and families need their own health insurance to prevent poverty.

Residents would be shocked to learn that they are not covered as they assumed that they were. Steps need to be taken to cover both UK and Guernsey residents no matter what sort of condition they have.
