UK and Guernsey Residents Warned to Check Health Insurance Cover

Andrew Ozanne, Guernsey resident and diabetic warned other locals to check their health insurance before heading to the UK. Residents will likely need to rethink their holiday plans as they may not be covered.

The warning came as Andrew Ozanne discovered that he was not covered due to a pre-existing condition. He believed that people needed to know to help them make decisions as he said: “Don’t travel. You’re at risk. It is a serious risk and it is a serious cost.”

UK and Guernsey authorities had a reciprocal arrangement; however, it was terminated in 2009. Currently there is no arrangement and little prospect that one will be reached in the near future.

Both UK and Guernsey residents will have to pay ambulance, doctors and acute care fees which will leave a large hole in your pocket. Few people can pay for care themselves.

Mr Ozanne found that his insurer could not cover him as he said:

“I’ve spoken to my insurers and they do try hard but they can’t offer insurance to cover my pre-existing condition.”

Guernsey authorities are unlikely to waive the cost knowing that there would be a public outcry. The locals would argue that they discriminate in favour of UK tourists. Individuals and families need their own health insurance to prevent poverty.

Residents would be shocked to learn that they are not covered as they assumed that they were. Steps need to be taken to cover both UK and Guernsey residents no matter what sort of condition they have.

More than 50 hospitals at risk due to the NHS cuts

The NHS is cutting funding to at least 50 hospitals in the UK and this is an alarming concern to the beneficiaries of hospital services. Most NHS executives are for the idea of cutting funding and more than half of them think it is the most important step that the NHS will take in the coming months.
With the cuts that will be reality in the next few months, some hospital services will have to be scrapped from some hospitals as they struggle to remain afloat since it is more important to be financially stable than to implement government health reforms.

According to the Kings Fund, about 70 hospitals in the UK are not financially stable enough to become foundation trusts and the near future would have been one of falling income, growing deficits and poor quality will sound the death knell on most hospitals if nothing was to be done about it.
According to the NHS, hospitals need to be financially responsible and align their services to prevent structural deficits that are causing problems with the management of the hospitals. Changes may have to be implemented in the long run which will involve downsizing of existing units to enable quality services in the long run. Still, the NHS cuts will not enable some hospitals to cover their costs even as NHS reduces funding for low priority treatments. On a positive note some NHS trust see that some short-term savings can be made even with the NHS cuts and by doing things differently and stopping others, they will improve their services.

Do you subscribe to any health magazines? I don’t, but then there’s so much stuff on the internet that I don’t really need to. You can even get (some of) The Lancet online now, which is pretty cool.

Generally though I find myself reading the health pages of the broadsheets to keep up with the latest news on stuff like the NHS and private medical care, plus some of the wider health issues of the day such as the political stuff surrounding stuff like alcohol consumption. A report in The Guardian today even states that the health service could save a hefty £1.7 billion if people suffering from addiction could get more help sooner.

It’s interesting to observe just how much smoking has been reduced in the last few years, I wonder if heavy drinking and public drunkenness will start to become old fashioned soon too?

Great viewing and a real insight into how our medical care has changed over the years – the programme leaves you wondering, what will our ancestors think of early 21st century healthcare?

Have you tried the Internet?

No, I’m not joking, yes I know that you are doing that right now, but I mean USE the internet, in its fullness. The internet has opened up a whole new ‘world’ of possibilities for the savvy. Markets previously inaccessable are now open to almost everyone. And the world of private health insurance is no different, all the major companies operate multinationally, and almost all of them offer some form of international policy. That means you are no longer limited to geting your insurance in the country you live.

If you are a Brit living in the USA you have as much right to buy your insurance in the UK as the USA [or even Russia if you wish], and if you are an American living in Britain the same rules apply. But not only that, if you are a Brit living in Britain, there is no difference. Take advantage of price differentials around the world, but of course it would be much more helpful if it was a company that you trust, or have even heard of [just because a Siberian company offers you a policy at really low prices doesn’t mean that they will live up to their promises, and how do you get your recourse from a Siberian company? Phone them up, e-mail them, fly off to Ulaan Baator to complain?

No, there are limits, you have to use the basic rule of common sense otherwise you will find yourself at the wrong end of a scam. simple rules are needed to play safe on the internet. Only go with brands you can trust. Never accept any unsolicited correspondance, and never transfer money to anybody unless you can be absolutely sure of their validity. Oh and don’t trust any sons of Nigerian Princes.
